Greetings on this end of August, Monday morning.
PERSONAL NOTE: I want to thank everyone who made this last Sunday such a great success (Rally Day). I thank the teachers who prepared the cheers and songs that everyone performed. Special thanks goes to Sallie Stanley and all of her associates for planning and executing Rally Day. It was great!!! Thank you also to all of you who worked in the kitchen for our Rally Day picnic. It was great... and no bugs! Thank you Elizabeth for bring the special music in the service. Fine job!

WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY INFORMATION: Once our study of the Psalms is over, I will be doing a 12 or 13 week study on tools of Hermeneutics (Bible Interpretation). Now, don't be afraid of that word! It is something that we all do, but we certainly should learn how to do it properly. Below, I give you three links to help you in the short term and the long term. I hope that you find them useful to increase your depth of knowledge.

August 22, 2011... Training Materials
Greetings on a very mild and enjoyable August Monday morning.
PERSONAL NOTE: Each time I start this blog, I want to thank everyone who made our Sunday service a great time of celebration and worship. I want to thank Sallie Stanley for all of her work towards the upcoming Rally Day (Aug. 28). I really thought that the skit that she put on was neat. Great job Sallie! I want to thank my wife, Jan for singing with me in a duet. Thanks Jan! We made it through.
Make plans now for The Gospelmen who will conclude our Summer Concert Series on September 18th at 4 pm. at the church. Decide now who you will invite and who you will actually bring. This is always a great opportunity to welcome guests into our church family. It's easy... let's do it!

YOU CAN KNOW THE WILL OF GOD: In Matthew 16 and verse 24 it says,"Then Jesus said to his disciples"If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me."[NIV]. The context of this passage is during a time when Jesus predicted his death at the hands of the Jewish religious leaders and his resurrection. Peter rebuked Jesus for saying such a thing and Jesus then takes Peter to task for being Stan's mouthpiece here and denying the need for what must come to pass. Jesus' death and resurrection are absolutely vital to the whole salvation idea. The Lamb must die in order to pay for the sins of the people. It is the concept of a substitutional atonement. We have eternal life because of Jesus' death at Calvary. Praise the Lamb of God!

August 8, 2011... Training Materials
Greetings to each of you on this warm and humid summer day.
PERSONAL NOTE: Yesterday's worship service was loaded with much to think about. I want to especially thank Missionary Bethany Thompson for sharing her ministry in Brazil with us once again. When our missionaries come home and bring us updates, it allows us to gain a better understanding of how we can help and how we can pray. Thanks, Bethany. It was a very good presentation.
I also want to thank all who were involved in the setting up and taking down of communion equipment. We appreciate your work.
REMINDER: Sunday, August 14th is our next in the Summer Concert Series. We will host the singing group, Stronghold. They come to us from the Fowlerville, Mi. area. We look forward to their ministry at 4 pm. Make plans to invite some people to join you for this concert. We will receive a love offering for the musicians.

This passage, though it is a negative, is used in context with the positive response, which is to lay up treasures in Heaven. Jesus' point in the lesson is that our attention should not be upon things that have only temporal value, but our attention should be on things that have eternal value. The Lord is our Master and we need to see our journey here through His eyes. Focus on the harvest. It has eternal ramifications.

The particular Greek word that is used for slander has with it the idea of speaking out against someone in a manner to disparage or verbally run them down. It was used by Aristophanes concerning a slave who blabbed secrets. It is clear that it refers to running off at the mouth so as to cause harm. It is the will of God that we should not be involved in this type of activity.
BOOK RECOMMENDATION: Today I recommend to you the book, Encountering The Old Testament by B. Arnold and B. Beyer. This book is kind of a Christian survey of the Old Testament. You will find it user friendly, informative, good scholarship and helpful pictures. It also includes a CD ROM study aid. Check it out.
